On we continue with the mind of Paul as seen throughout Romans. “For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” As we continue to study the Apostle Paul’s letters we find him not just a profound thinker but also a brilliant peacemaker. Paul was deeply concerned about the tension between Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians within the Roman fellowship. We may imagine that the earliest Christians in Rome were Jewish Christians who witnessed first in synagogues in Rome. Paul addresses them throughout the letter, especially in the early section, challenging judgmental Jewish pride and employing a theology of leveling so that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world, including Jews, may be held accountable to God. Later, in a more positive vein, Paul disclosed the important role the Jewish people have in the eschatological plan of God. This appears in the context of his dealing with the equally unacceptable pride of Gentile Christians at Rome who looked down on their Jewish fellow believers because their people had as a whole rejected the Gospel.

We continue to study Old Testament and this month will focus on Songs of Solomon. The Song is placed among the books of wisdom and poetry in the Septuagint and most English versions. While not wisdom literature in the strict sense, the Song shares some affiliates with wisdom in that the work is associated with wise King Solomon. It concerns itself with the mystery of man as he was created male and female, and offers instruction (at least implicitly) on human behavior as it relates to sexuality and marriage.
