The Names of God, each powerful and meaningful, we study all of them in new series of programs. Today we talk about Yahweh, which means “The Lord” – Yahweh is derived from the Hebrew word for “I AM.” It is the proper name of the divine person, coming from the verb which means to “exist,” “be.” When God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses was scared. He needed reassurance, he needed to know God was bigger than this problem, that He would carry them through, that even if people wouldn’t listen to him, they would listen to the One who sent him.
What were the Crusades and how did they impact Jerusalem? For almost 200 years during the Middle Ages, the Christian Crusades wrested control of the Palestine region from the Selçuk Turks through a series of military incursions made up of Christian armies largely from Western Europe. We talk about that in our segments of, “Archeology and the Bible.”
“Why does your Master sit at the table with tax collectors and sinners?” In this series we look at the significance of the Sermon on the Mount for the twelve disciples and for every Christian.
The Apostle Paul did enormous work in the name of Jesus Christ. The letter to the church in Colossae was probably written by Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome, in a state of house arrest, with the freedom to have people around him. That kind of freedom suggest the likelihood of eventual release, which is further indicated in the fact that no letters had been received from his accusers in Judea and no one had arrived evidently to accuse him before the Roman authorities to whom he had appealed.
The letter of Colossians was written to deal with a problem that was troubling churches all over the western portion of Asia Minor, from Ephesus to Colossae. The amalgamation of Jewish and Greek cultures in these churches had generated Jewish-Hellenistic philosophy, which was essentially pagan and which threatened to destroy the uniqueness of Jesus Christ as the Son of God.
Divine Ownership is part of Christianity and we talk about that in the program “Life with Christ.” Paul emphasized that the saints in Corinth could not use their bodies in the way that would be a dishonor to God, for they did not belong to them. Their bodies and spirits belong to God, for they had been bought with a price.
