For a radio broadcaster, a listener’s response brings in so much encouragement and satisfaction. So, we do thank God for each listener, and for those who choose to write to us. I think such reward and satisfaction would be the same to all the friends and donors of World Christian Broadcasting (WCB). Therefore, as this version of What’s Going On for the Chinese Language Service begins, a response from one Chinese listener is selected to encourage and to thank you.

He wrote, “Recently, I have been reading the Bible from World Christian Broadcasting. This Bible is easy to understand and well translated. I really like it. So far the Book that I spent more time than others is Ecclesiastes. I hope that I’ll persist in reading the Bible. I spent more time trying to understand what the passage means according to the text and with the help of my past experience. I desire to memorize the passages. But, it is hard. Please keep in touch.” This listener requested a Bible after he listened to our radio programs and visited our website.

What is Happening in the Chinese World?

China celebrates its 70th birthday on October First this year. The country has demonstrated remarkable progress in economy, science and technology, as well as quality of life among her people. We should be happy and congratulate them. While China enjoys her fast development, the national government wants to secure the sustainability of growth by strengthening control in many respects. Restricting religious activities and issuing the Extraditing Criminals Law in Hong Kong have all caused unrest. We hope government measures may soon be relaxed and peace be restored. Please join us in praying for leaders of China, people of Hong Kong, and churches in China.

Chinese listeners of our broadcasts live all across the globe. Among them twenty-five million live in South East Asia. Nine million are citizens of Singapore and Malaysia. Lately they have been experiencing smog problem in the air. The cause of haze are the slash and burn practice by farmers and peat fires are blown by the wind from Sumatra, Indonesia. Please pray for the health of people in that region, and for the solutions being reached soon.

News from Chinese Staff Members

As we serve the Chinese listeners daily, we thank God for the peace of mind we get to enjoy because he has been taking care of our family members far and near. Here are Thanksgiving news to share about our family members. Salina Ho’s Mom just celebrated her ninety-fifth birthday. We are thankful that Shumei’s youngest daughter, Alice Lee, had a safe business trip to the Republic of Congo. Alice works for a NGO company which assists economic development among African nations. Edward Ho and his siblings gave their father the gift of flying a single engine airplane in Murfreesboro, TN, on his ninetieth birthday. Mr. Ho used to be a pilot.

Friends of our Ministry

Jeff Robertson of Agape Asia Foundation has visited us a few times. Giving care to the orphans, providing education opportunity to them, and offering medical care is their mission. This month Agape Asia did a presentation at the Chinese church in Nashville which is a faithful supporter to World Christian Broadcasting. During the visit, Jeff introduced Dr. Joshua to the church. He had assisted the medical care projects for several needy children. Jeff’s presentation inspired the church and encouraged services projects that the church could do, and also suggested programs that WCB can produce in the future. We are thankful to God for the friends he brings our way.

Programming

The philosophy behind the magazine format of our programming encourages us to tell God’s stories in the lives of people. This month there are several inspiring programs produced. Salina told an inspiring stories of her friends some of whose lives were influenced by spouses’ illnesses and parents’ harsh comment. But, with the truth and love of God not only did they learn how not be affected in negative way but also to restore difficult relationships with them in God’s way. Shumei invited a Brentwood high school teacher, Ms. Danmei Liu, to share how God answered prayers by providing immediate medical care to a sick student of the Chinese Language Class while he traveled in China with other classmates in an exchange program. Dr. Jingqiong Kang, a neurologist at Vanderbilt University, shared how she was touched by what Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Short do in helping the people of Tanzania where they serve as missionaries, which reminded her of what another missionary of the nineteenth century, Hudson Tayler, did in serving many Chinese whose lives were deeply influenced by Jesus later.

Interviews with people far and near are gaining prominence in our Chinese programming. Dr. Qingguo Wang of Lipscomb University shared, in an interview, how God healed his illness, answered his prayers, guided him in difficult time, reshaped his character, and led him into services to others. Mr. Canhuang Wu who works in the technology industry was interviewed about the five characteristics of freedom we could experience in Jesus. His insight makes the gospel very appealing. Dr. Pusheng Lin, a college president, shared in the interview how he depended on the word of God as he builds life skills daily in students on campus. Brother Yin Ji of the Tianmu Church of Christ started a new interview series for us on the messages to the seven churches from Jesus based on the Book of Revelation. We appreciate Yin’s service very much.
